Photo: Ted Rieger "Rather than mixing cool air with warm air near the ceiling, we want to maintain temperature stratification, so the cool air rises and displaces the layer of warm air through open windows near the ceiling," Boulton explained. Three windows on the north wall open automatically to exhaust warm air before being closed, and the fans can displace one full volume of interior air in less than 30 minutes. The building then maintains cool target temperatures through the next day. The concrete slab floor was designed with built-in tubing to circulate hot and cold water for infloor radiant heating and cooling, used as needed, to maintain interior temperatures. The building's interior perimeter wall is lined with an 8-foot-high wall built of concrete blocks to protect the insulated wall from damage from forklifts and work operations, and it adds thermal mass and insulation to maintain temperature. These specially manufactured concrete blocks from Basalite Concrete Products were made using Carbon Cure technology that injects waste carbon dioxide (CO2) into the concrete mix to permanently sequester CO2 into each block. The floor was made with a low CO2 mix by Central Concrete of San Francisco. Since the production of cement is responsible for 6%-8% of humangenerated CO2 in the environment, these new concrete mixes provide lower carbon footprint alternatives to traditional concrete. Brenneman monitors and graphs interior and exterior temperatures on his office computer and said the building performed to design specification this summer, based on data collected since May 2013. Inside air temperature ranged from 69°F-76.5°F, with outside air temperature 55°F-102°F. "The building itself is a testament to people thinking outside the box," Brenneman said. CAPTURING AND REUSING WATER A concrete pad outside the south wall of the building supports six 40,000-gallon John Deere Green Tech tanks to store water for winery operations. Rainwater will be captured from the roof of the nearby Robert Mondavi Institute and piped into as many as four tanks for storage during the rainy season. Remaining tank space will store filtered rainwater. The above-ground tanks have a galvanized steel outer shell that protects a plastic inner tank that holds the water. Boulton said underground tanks may have been a more efficient use of space, but, he explained, "We want visitors to understand that these are water tanks and this is the entire water supply for the winery.
