T exas Crushed Stone Co., a family-owned and operated aggregate company located in the hill country of central Texas, has been one of the nation's top producing crushed stone operations for the past few years. This is quite an accomplishment, considering the economy and the decline in construction. The company was founded by Edwin Brazelton Snead. "My dad went into the construction busi- ness in Austin in the '30s," says Bill Snead, presi- dent. "Ten years later, he bought a 200-acre quarry site in Austin, and Texas Crushed Stone Co. was incorporated in 1947." In the late 1950s, Snead closed the construc- tion company, and the quarry in Austin was play- ing out, so he began to search for a new quarry. He found a site approximately 30 miles north of Austin in Georgetown, but was concerned that it would be too far from Austin, where the majority of his aggregate customers were located. How- ever, at the same time, the Missouri Pacific Rail- road was abandoning one of its rail spurs running between Georgetown and Round Rock, a fast- growing city just south of Georgetown. So, Snead purchased the property in Georgetown and, along with some other businessmen in Georgetown, bought the rail spur and incorporated the George- town Railroad.
