T he Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI) with the Brick Indus- try Association and National Concrete Masonry Association announced the 6th Annual HNA Hardscape Project Award winners. The Hardscape Project Awards recognize outstanding hardscape projects by contractors building residential walkways, patios, driveways, and commercial plazas, parking lots, and streets. To kick off this special section, Pine Hall Brick was kind enough to provide us with an in-depth before, during and after look at one of the award-winning projects. The photo essay that follows highlights the win- ner in the Clay Brick - Residential cate- gory. Shorter profiles of all other HNA Project Award winners begin on page 15. Congrat- ulations to all. Award: Clay Brick - Residential Project Title: Where Edibles Meet Hard- scapes Project Location: Clyde, N.C. Square Feet of Project: 2,600 Contractor: Haywood Landscapes, Inc. Main Product Manufacturer: Pine Hall Brick Project Designer: Haywood Landscapes, Inc/Broadbooks Associates Project Description: With the initial design criteria of providing an area to grow vegetables each year, this "vegetable gar- den" developed into a backyard room. The design takes advantage of the sun exposure while creating an area for gardening and entertainment that complements the archi- tectural style of the 26-year old home. The project began with developing a plan to satisfy the owner's desire for gardening, great views, sun and wind orientation, and existing grades; and then it blossomed from there. Although not originally planned, the existing delapidated patio and retaining wall were completely demolished, re- designed, and built to satisfy the new design criteria. Features of the 2,600-square-foot instal- lation include a multi-level gardening area where vegetables can be accessed from above or below each terrace. A mix of or- namentals provide year-round color and at- traction. The symmetrical clay hardscape design, which features Pine Hall Brick's Pathway Full Range Brick pavers, is ac- cented with night backlighting to highlight retaining walls and paving patterns for a vi- sually engaging effect. www.landscapeirrigation.com Landscape Design and Construction All photos on pages 12-14 courtesy of Pine Hall Brick 12 Landscape and Irrigation April 2014 Award-winning Projects A before, during and after look at an HNA Project Award winner The Hardscape Project Awards recognize outstanding hardscape projects by contractors building residential walkways, patios, driveways, and commercial plazas, parking lots, and streets.
