Custom Rigs ReadeR Rigs May 2014 | Overdrive | 61 Made in the '80s Owner-operator Lavern Cross of Middlebury, Ind., hauls new grain-handling equipment with his 1980 Peterbilt 352. When he purchased the rig, it was an old farm truck that "was a mess," he says, with mice living inside. Cross painted the truck, stretched the frame and redid the inside. "I touched every piece of it," he says of the rig, which is powered by a 400-hp Cummins and a 13-speed transmission. Cross says the truck garners atten- tion. "It's a lot of fun to drive," he says. "I get to talk to a lot of people I wouldn't normally get to talk to." Big Blue Owner-operator John West of Sumter, S.C., drives this 1998 Freightliner Classic for Harris Transport out of North Carolina, where he hauls automo- tive materials and expedites, sometimes for FedEx and UPS. West purchased Big Blue in 2005 and has added "a fair amount of chrome" to the truck, which is equipped with a Detroit Series 60 and a 10-speed transmission. He recently converted his lights to LEDs.
