WELDING ACCESSORIES ProStar Wire Wheels & Brushes ™ Wire Wheels Used on bench or straight grinders, some used on right angle grinders Bench Grinders 6” (15.2 cm) O.D. Mini Grinders 4” (10.2 cm) O.D. Cup Brushes Used on right angle grinders Grinder Size 7”–9” (17.8–22.9 cm) Brush Basics A brush is a tool for cleaning or deburring. It does not remove metal, though it can improve Micro-Finish. Fill material can be carbon wire, stainless wire, brass or a non-metallic material such as nylon or impregnated material with abrasive. All power brushes are used on specific tools. Brush Fill nnCarbonnWire Designed with four layers of reinforcement. Most popular wire used on all carbon steel applications. High grade industrial tempered with very close chemical and hardness tolerance. nnStainlessnWire Designed for specific applications and/or difficult-to-grind materials such as stainless steel, aluminum, etc. n nContaminate-FreenProducts Only necessary to avoid contamination of the material you are brushing (stainless, aluminum, brass, etc.) with carbon. 302 stainless steel is used on all stainless brushes and will pick up a low magnetic charge. Buying the Right Brush Cup Brush Crimp Brush Wire Types nnStraightnWire Use a KNOT, TWIST or CABLE TWIST- style brush–very aggressive. nnCrimpnWire Used in conventional brush for less aggressive work. Covers a larger area. Wire Size n Measured in diameters of thousandths (0.014” is smaller than 0.020”; 0.035” is the heaviest). Applications Straight knot wire is the most aggressive and acts as a chipping hammer to clean up welds. Radial style is best for weld cleaning. Cups in knot construction are best for cleaning prior to welding when the surface is flat. Very heavy rust or scale removal, recommend 0.035” wire and 2 row brushes for in-line equipment. Cleaning flat surfaces and rough welds Light paint or scale Straight Wire Knot Brush Heavy clean-up or rough welds Wire Size (general apps.) O.D. D4 Recommended 0.014” (.36 mm) for radial, 0.020” (.15 mm) for cup Determined by type and size of tool Crimp wire radial brushes are best on bench grinders to clean edges or to gang up on a straight grinder to do a larger path of cleaning. Crimp cups are suited for lighter rust and paint removal as many wires attack like needles. Stainless steel wire brushes aluminum oxide off before welding. Mini Grinders 5” (12.7 cm) 4-1/2” (11.4 cm) 4” (10.2 cm) Brush Size 4” (10.2 cm) 5” (12.7 cm) 6” (15.2 cm) Brush Size 3-1/2” (8.9 cm) 2-3/4” (7.0 cm) End Brushes–1/4” (6.3 mm) Shank Used on electric, air or battery- operated hand drills and presses Major Styles Straight end flat surfaces and corners Flair for edge and side cleaning
