Beginning in 2005, the Irrigation Association (IA) launched an initiative to designate the month of July as Smart Irrigation Month. The industry cam- paign, which increases public awareness of the value of water-use efficiency, has grown each year. Leaders in several states have even made proclamations offi- cially recognizing July as Smart Irrigation Month. According to IA, as a landscape and irrigation industry professional, you are in an optimum position to educate custom- ers about efficient water use, grow the demand for water-saving technologies and services, provide solutions to water challenges, and position your company as a leader in water-efficient practices. Getting involved is as simple as adding the Smart Irrigation Month logo to your website, ads or newsletter, or highlighting water-saving products during July. One of IA's Smart Irrigation Month initiatives is the Smart Marketing Contest. It honors the best Smart Irrigation Month promotions (conducted during the pre- vious year). All contest participants are recognized at the Irrigation Show and Education Conference and win- ners receive additional recognition at the show, in print, and in publicity pieces distributed to industry media. As part of Smart Irrigation Month, IA also offers a wealth of resources, which include the following: • Smart tips and ideas for participating in the campaign. • Webinars. • Downloadable Smart Irrigation Month logos. • Articles for customer and employee newsletters. • A sample proclamation for your local government to declare July as Smart Irrigation Month. • Watering tips. • Pre-recorded public service announcement. • Sample press releases. • Coloring and puzzle book for distribution at local schools or community events. It's not just about technology It should be pointed out that Smart Irrigation Month is not just about high- lighting the latest Smart irrigation tech- nology. While the innovations continue to get smarter and more efficient, con- serving Earth's most valuable resource has many facets, including: • Proper irrigation system design and placement to avoid overwatering, runoff, and water waste. • System maintenance and inspection to check for leaks and ensure proper operation. • Intelligent design of landscapes for optimum water management. • Stormwater management, including reduction of soil compaction to reduce runoff. • Rainwater catchment to further reduce runoff.
