"At negative 45 Celsius, everyone is dressed up like marshmallow men, but they can still access all the points," Tim Tris- cari, 6020B service engineer says of its walk-through power module. "Getting around the machine and being able to service it was definitely hit spot on." The shovel has several features designed for streamlined mainte- nance, including its single-engine (a 1,043-horsepower Cat 32 ACERT en- gine) configuration. A patent-pending dedicated pump-flow allocation technol- ogy governs hydraulic pump utilization to reduce energy losses and lower fuel consumption. An automatic lubrica- tion system reduces service time, while the hydraulically driven pump supplies grease to the swing bearing, the swing gearbox bearing, and all pivot points on the attachment. The 6020B is configured as a back- hoe and is said to deliver superior dig- ging forces. The standard bucket size is 15.7 cubic yards. Both Cat MultiPlus rock buckets (for standard rock and soil applications) and high abrasion buckets (for dense rock and aggressive digging action) are available. The shovel's stick power got rave re- views from Steve Maloney, its operator trainer, who says he went into work earlier each day as the first unit was being built. "I knew she was something special," he says. "She's born to dig." In terms of technology, the shovel is designed to accept four capability sets of the MineStar System: Detect, which includes cameras and advanced sensing technologies; Terrain, which provides loading guidance; Fleet, which provides tracking, assignment, and production reporting; and Health, which reports machine condition and provides diag- nostic tools. The 6020B is expected to be available during the second quarter.
