The feature exhibit at Milwaukee
Art Museum highlights haute
couture. Inspiring Beauty examines
the history of the charity fashion
spectacle that redefined concepts
of beauty, style and empowerment
for African Americans through the
Ebony Fashion Fair.
Ensembles and accessories are
displayed on specially manufac-
tured mannequins, while archival
photographs and video outline
the history of the traveling fashion
show and its director and producer,
Eunice Walker Johnson. Inspir-
ing Beauty explores three major
themes: Vision, Innovation and
Power. Fashion Fair made 170
stops each year, including Milwau-
kee, and an exhibit section includes
13 designer garments from Mount
Mary University's signature Ebony
Fashion Fair collection. "This is a
stunning exhibition that has been
dramatically installed to give the
visitor a true runway experience,"
said Daniel Keegan, director of the
Milwaukee Art Museum.
On view through May 3, the
exhibit is organized by the Chicago
History Museum in cooperation
with Johnson Publishing Company,
publisher of Ebony magazine.
