In December 2013, Omnitracs purchased Roadnet Technologies, a provider of fleet management software solutions to private fleets. Soon after, Omnitracs purchased XRS Corp. to target fleets seeking smart device- based applications for both inside and outside the cab. Roadnet's MobileCast app runs on a range of different handhelds, includ- ing smartphones and tablets. The app presents the route and delivery sequence to drivers, along with details about the order and customer at each stop. MobileCast has scanning capability to ensure drivers are picking up and delivering the right products, as well as an automated proof-of-delivery fea- ture with electronic signature capture. Fleets can activate additional capa- bilities and workflows such as mobile printing and custom forms to "collect any data you want," says Kevin Haugh, vice president and general manager of Omnitracs' Roadnet division. One thing MobileCast does not do is capture drivers' hours of service and engine telematics data. Fleets that want to include that information in Roadnet for reporting can use its telematics framework to integrate the information from third-party telemat- ics providers, Haugh says. Making the most of routing software may take a combination of technologies that increasingly are be- ing offered by a single provider.
