If corrosion is already present, remove it by sandblasting the equipment or cleaning it with a wire brush. Preparing the metal first ensures the paint will bond to it and protect it from further rusting. Sandblasting and repainting is partic- ularly effective in controlling uniform corrosion and keeping it from becoming a larger problem. When repainting, Thron prefers a two-part paint with an added hardener, like Por-15. "It's one of the most durable paints I've tried," he says. "You can practically hit it with a hammer and it won't chip." Thron regularly sandblasts and re- paints his backhoe trailer—including the underside—with the paint to keep the road salt from corroding it. "It's expensive paint," he says. "But it's worth the investment in the long run." Williams stresses no matter what, it's critically important to stay on top of regular maintenance to prevent both pit- ting and uniform corrosion. "It's no different than any other regu- lar maintenance. It's a never-ending job," he says. "You either have to up- keep your equipment or replace it, and there's too much money out there to just let it go." CORROSION from page 22 To prevent corrosion some manufacturers have metal components go through a blasting process before applying an epoxy primer and top coat. These pictures depict a metal rig part from GEFCO Inc. The first is the pre-blasting, followed by post-blasting, after a primer, and after a top coat. Photo submitted by GEFCO Inc.
