In the case that you're not able to drive away from the tornado, abandon your vehicle and seek shelter in a building right away. Fast food restaurants usually have coolers that can withstand a tornado; therefore this tends to be a good option for seeking shelter. If you aren't near any buildings, NPR notes that you should not stay in your vehicle. Look for an area noticeably lower than the roadway, such as a ditch or a culvert. Protect your head and face with your hands and some other cushion, like a pillow, blanket or jacket, if possible. Do not watch the tornado as it goes by. Be sure to keep your head covered to protect yourself from the fl ying debris. While it may seem like a good idea, do not seek shelter under a bridge. You are safer in a low-lying area. You may think you'll never be caught it this situation, but it's better to be prepared than sorry. To be prepared for tornado, truckers should always keep the following in their trucks: • Helmet • Blanket • Pillow • Flashlight • Portable phone charger • Weather radio We hope you're never caught in this situation, but if you are, now you know the basic tornado safety tips.
