VOICES 12 | Overdrive | November 2015 Owner-operator Joey Romero has been strug- gling to adjust to sleeping with a CPAP machine's mask over his face for months now to deal with sleep apnea. His plight was told in a September story in the Minnesota Daily Globe newspaper, which also discussed other aspects of the situation for truckers. Overdrive has dissected the confusion surrounding sleep apnea within the past year. This includes the problems of individ- uals such as Greg Price, who've found themselves in their own regulatory twilight zones when it comes to sleep apnea. Here's a tip of the hat to the Minnesota paper for getting the story right. Find links to it at Overdri- veOnline.com by search- ing "apnea twilight zone." With news of the Federal Reserve board of governors contem- plating a rise in short- term interest rates, a majority of truckers surveyed favored no change. The Fed has suggested that after years of historically low levels, some rise was imminent to stimulate the economy. The rates that the Fed controls are applicable directly to bank-to-bank short-term lending rates, but tend to impact the cost of borrowing and returns on savings. Poll results suggest strongly that the majority believes economic conditions are such that ease of access to bor- rowed money is more important than improved yields on savings. "I had a bull hauler passing me in the left lane," Trucker Michael Kimball wrote with the accompanying dashcam video, which shows the four-wheeler passing on the right. "I guess the four-wheeler couldn't wait." It's yet another example of the risky behaviors truckers often witness. Just use the shoulder I think a lot of clinics are using the training to try to generate additional profit. — Arik Spencer, North Dakota Motor Carriers executive vice president, in the Minnesota Daily Globe newspaper on the increasing willingness of such clinics to refer drivers for sleep apnea testing Newspaper explains trucking's apnea problem
