November 2015 | Overdrive | 15 TWO SOMALI-AMERICAN Muslim drivers were awarded more than $240,000 after they were fired in 2009 for refusing to transport alcohol, saying it violated their religious beliefs under Islamic law. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission brought a lawsuit on behalf of drivers Mahad Abass Mohamed and Abdkiarim Hassan Bulshale, who drove for Star Transport, which admitted liability in March but went to trial to determine damages and back pay. SWIFT TRANSPORTATION settled a lawsuit by one of its former owner-operators, ending the fleet's bid to fight the litigation in which it was ordered to pay $2.6 million in damages to trucker Herbert Willoughby. He suffered a severe foot injury in 2012 when a loaded Swift trailer ran over his foot. Details of the settle- ment were not released. NEBRASKA TRUCKER Ronald Mockelman was sentenced to nine months in jail, 40 hours of community service and one year of supervised release after pleading guilty in August to threatening a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration employee with bodily injury. Mockelman made threatening phone calls to two FMCSA offices after he was fined. A REPORT on the hours of service 34-hour restart regulation could be completed by yearend, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration said after concluding the data collection phase of the con- gressionally required study.
