November 2015 | Overdrive | 49 TEAM EFFORT improve fuel economy by an aver- age of 3 percent. "Nonintegrated drivelines typically are not used in downspeeding due to shifting and performance issues." Now there's a newer wrinkle to the AMT proposition, as other manu- facturers have found opportunities to offer similar systems. Proprietary code sharing has sprung up between Eaton and engine partners Cummins and Paccar. Though Eaton isn't part of a uni- fied truck and engine maker, it fully appreciates the importance of vertical integration for advanced drivelines. "We have always worked with multiple engine makers," says Ryan Trzybinski, product planning manager. "That gives us an inher- ent understanding of where the market is going, where the technol- ogy is going, where integration is going, and how our transmissions can be designed to take advantage of all of that." Trzybinski says the partnership his company has with Cummins, and the success of the subsequent Cummins- Eaton SmartAdvantage powertrain, shows how Eaton's diversity benefits both companies' mutual customers. "We have been able to take what we have learned from that and apply similar technologies with other engine makes, including the Paccar MX13 and Navistar N13 engines," he says. Eaton has offered a clear ben- efit through its clutch integration development, Tryzbinski says. "By designing and manufacturing the clutch to work in harmony with the transmission and understanding the intricacies of these two com- ponents, Eaton can deliver a total package," he says. TEAM EFFORT have learned from that and apply similar technologies with other engine makes, including the Paccar MX13 Volvo's XE integrated powertrain packages for its D11, D13 and D16 engines can downspeed cruising rpm for added fuel savings. ® from J.
