In late August, Don Davis' loaded rig was hijacked at an Oglethorpe County, Ga., logging site by Ryan Edgar Arnold. He was fleeing police after severely injuring a girlfriend, who later died. When Davis refused to ram police vehicles, Arnold reportedly shot him and commandeered the truck, drawing fire from officers. Davis was shot seven times, possibly by police as well as Arnold, reports noted. Arnold was wounded and arrested. A family friend, Deb- bie Cofer, reached out to Overdrive via our Facebook page to make note of a fund-raising effort to help defray Davis' medical costs. "There's a driver here in Georgia who could use some help from his fellow truckers," she wrote. Cofer says Davis' right hand was shattered by a bullet, among other injuries, and "he'll be out of work probably a year, his doctors say." His wife, Kathy Davis, is supplying 24-hour care and is unable to work. Find more information about the funding cam- paign in the Sept. 28 post to the Channel 19 blog, along with links to news reports about the incident and Davis' recovery. Operator on the mend after shooting Remembering a Georgia fleet after its owner's passing Trevor Westmoreland shared this picture in Over- drive's Reader Rigs gallery of the erstwhile McGuire Trucking fleet of Cleve- land, Ga. Wayne McGuire passed late last year, and his company ceased opera- tions in January. "McGuire Trucking was in busi- ness from the early '80s. Wayne McGuire … always ran beautiful Kenworth trucks, many of which he bought new," West- moreland wrote. News flash: Lumpers recognize driver week Detention problems at grocery ware- houses are legion. Such locations have the worst reputation for waits. Chance 2 Transport owner Rod Miller told a story of a Kroger facility in Delaware, Ohio, adding this wise- crack: "If you need a 10-hour break at the place you're delivering, that's a good place to go." But if you delivered to select Safe- way and other grocery distribution centers out West during National Truck Driver Appreciation Week in September, you might have noticed something unusual – doughnuts and coffee, care of the Universal Lump- ers company. In addition to the treats, the com- pany also gave a battery-charging de- vice for portable electronics to each hauler, along with what it described as "verbal acknowledgement in per- son by each of UL's team members." Find more voices on detention and lumper services in the Sept. 15 and 22 posts on Channel 19. UL team members show driver appreciation. This Peterbilt daycab, shown before the hijacking, is owned by Don Davis, 58, who lives in North Georgia.
