ancy Eastman and Paul Briggs at Art of the Land transformed a dated hillside outdoor living space into an open and spacious haven. To do so, they replaced the deteriorated wood deck with composite decking
that extends into a fl agstone patio. For a more airy sitting area, they removed the overhead cover – composed of wood posts and beams with a metal roof – and installed a pergola that encompasses the deck. They further opened up the design by removing the railroad-tie retaining walls that lined the hill, with fewer, wider terraces connected by short stairways. The walls are at sitting height and provide additional, informal seating. The clients also wanted more plantings, rather than just perennial beds, for greater impact and screening along the top of the slope. So, the crew installed medium-size conifers, broadleaf evergreens, small decidu- ous shrubs and a few perennials. "Our selection focused on water-wise plants," Eastman says. "It was an important consideration for our semi-arid climate." Art of the Land won the 2011 Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado (ALCC) Excellence in Landscape Award for this project.
