Ahead of the Curve Using and protecting a steep slope

of the project were to stabilize the soils on the slope and create a use- able outdoor room," says TG&R's landscape architect Averett Tinsley, RLA, ASLA. To achieve this goal, TG&R created a split-level terrace with two Belgard-paver patios and then directed the runoff into channels that will reduce erosion on the embankment. The crew worked to keep the existing wooden deck and step system that descends the slope to the beach. On the beach, they added sand and a layer of rip-rap to protect the shore- line against high-water levels. They also added mulch and plants along the slope to further prevent erosion. The plant selection included evergreens such as winter jasmine, 'Aurea' junipers and 'Sherwoodi' abelia – which will spread out, creat- ing masses of green on the surface and roots holding together the ground below. They also installed spring bloomers 'George Tabor' and 'Delaware Valley White' azaleas, 'Lynwood' forsythia and 'Pee Wee' hydrangeas. Grasses and sedges adorn the slope, wistfully playing in the wind. Canadian hemlocks and 'Coral Bark' Japa- nese maples will frame the views as they grow to their stately mature size.
