MANAGEMENT EAST COAST WATCH ate that with the abundance of his- toric landmarks attracting tourists to this part of America, making the connection to these sites is one way to call attention to their brands. FUN WITH FAUNA Animals can play an appealing role in a winery's storyline, espe- cially when it's for a good cause. On his website, Red Newt Cellars owner David Whiting explains why he named his Finger Lakes winery in honor of the eastern spotted red newt, a small, indigenous, amphibi- ous animal that he describes as "often overlooked but incredibly beautiful and elegant. It possesses a kind of strength and poise that is obvious yet sometimes defies description. These are some of the characteristics of the wines that I strive to make." The graphics on Red Newt's labels sometimes feature one stylized variation or another of a newt, and the name of some of the wines (Salaman- der White, for example) further underscores the winery's local and charmingly quirky environmental- oriented story. Chateau Morrisette's ongoing nar rat ive focuses on domes- t ic rather than wi ld cr i t ters. The hero of this pioneering Floyd County, Va., winery is a black Labra- dor ret r iever named Hans, who kept David Morrisette com- pany while he cre- ated the estate's first wine in 1982. "Hans stuck by David dur ing planting, grow- ing and harvest season, and was expert in lapping up any wine spill- age during production," accord- ing to the company's written back story. "Hans was instrumental in encouraging the Morrisettes to persevere in their hob- by-gone-wild venture by offering moral support, a warm muzzle and a friendly hand- shake through thick and thin." Morrisette's choice of his pooch as the winery's ami - able emblem was part of his desire to, as he put Red Newt Cellars in the Finger Lakes is named for the eastern spotted red newt, which is indigenous to the area.
