MOWA's dramatic building is situated on the banks of the Milwaukee River. Opened in 2013, the wedge-shaped structure connects to West Bend's vibrant downtown shops and restaurants with a contemporary white footbridge. Founded in 1961, the museum's permanent collection consists of over 5,000 works of contemporary and historic art by more than 350 artists. The museum's property includes new, spectacularly landscaped gardens and green spaces. The Gardens at MOWA feature 800 quaking aspen trees, 1,200 hydrangeas, outdoor sculptures, and interconnected walkways. West Bend is located 40 miles northwest of downtown Milwau - kee. It's a model that defies the idea that museums are exclusive or elitist. Instead, museum admission fees are actually low cost memberships that allow unlimited access to the museum for a full year.
