CUSTOM RIGS READER RIGS '70s throwback Gary Bryant of Portland, Ore., hauls mattresses with this 1996 Freightliner cabover that's equipped with a 425-hp Detroit and 10-speed transmission. He added twin stacks and air cleaners to give it the appearance of having a D12 automated transmission. The rig's paint job and overall design are engineered to mimic trucks from the 1970s, says Bryant, who runs under his own authority and has had the truck for eight years. Perfect pair Star Traywick of Tucson, Ariz., drives this 2005 Freightliner Classic XL to pull a dry van for Rudolph Freight of Murray, Ky. After being in trucking for 36 years, Traywick recently went out on her own to start HiWay 2 Heaven Transport Inc. "Cricket," powered by a 685-hp Detroit and 13-speed transmission, is so named for its steady hum while running. West End Graphics of El Paso, Texas, did the graphics. The dragon in the paint job is a copy of Traywick's tattoo. She also added round headlights with halos, a custom-cut bumper, ground spec lights, all of the chrome, a bug screen and tank covers. 'Mack-nificent' Owner-operator Leon Nelson of Stratton, Ohio, hauled rock and coal in this 1984 Mack Magnum Superliner until he stopped driving about four years ago. The rig, which boasts a 500-hp E9 Mack engine and 10-speed transmission, is now Nelson's show truck. It's outfitted to win with stainless-steel rear fenders and frame plates, chrome air cleaners and 5-inch stacks. Nelson says he wanted to keep the original "Bulldog" look.
