By Tom Kelley Kelley's Kool Ford's Better Idea Detroit Auto Show Reveals Next-Gen F150 E JOBS for TEAMS | ven though continuing economic doldrums have put somewhat of a damper on new vehicle introductions, the 2013 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) still managed to host the debut of a few vehicles that qualify for iconic status. Held in Detroit, Michigan each January, the NAIAS is the North American auto industry's pinnacle event. While the timing and the venue may be less than ideal, the show's key draw is that everybody who is anybody in the manufacturing world is there, and the attending press corp's global pedigree ensures the largest print, online and video audience for the introduction of "mission-critical" new models. Auto shows everywhere are frequently 22 JFT0413_Kool Runnings.indd 1 the debut location for "concept vehicles" – hand-built one-off prototypes showcasing designs and features that may show up on a production vehicle a few years or more into the future. Over the last decade, however, more and more of these concept vehicles have shifted away from a "pie in the sky" prototype meant to gauge customer reaction to future plans, shifting more toward a "sneak peek" at a thinlydisguised production model destined to hit the streets within 12-15 months.
