A s the saying goes, "April showers bring May flowers." But your clients will no doubt want you to bring flowers as soon as possible. In our January issue, we covered a selection of the new plants available for 2013. However, there have been many more selections recently released or announced. The following are some of the latest to merit consideration for this year's landscapes: * ReBloom Azaleas — Experience a remarkable new series of evergreen, diseaseresistant, reblooming azaleas that feature large flowers that appear in spring, then rebloom in summer, and continue blooming until hard frost. These new azaleas from Garden Debut (www.gardendebut.com) offer better cold hardiness, withstanding temperatures 0 to -10 degrees Fahrenheit (USDA Zone 6). They also offer a wider range of distinctive colors and large, double- and even triple-petal flowers that provide big landscape impact. ReBloom Azaleas stay compact due to the self-pruning nature of the continual flushes of bloom that promote branching; and are moderate growers, reaching maturity in 10 to 12 years. They will tolerate some sun, but thrive in partial shade. They perform best in moist, fertile, highly organic and well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. Native soils higher than pH 7.0 should be amended with organic matter. * Windcliff Fragrant Pachysandra — Fragrant white flowers appear in early spring and repeat in autumn on this very special selection of Pachysandra from Monrovia (www.monrovia.com). Glossy evergreen foliage provides an attractive groundcover for shade or partial sun. Grows to 4 to 6 inches tall with a spreading habit (USDA Zones 6-9). Requires full shade to partial sun and regular watering, especially in extreme heat. * Sedom 'Dynomite' — Very short and dense, its best comparison is Sedum 'Hot Stuff'. 'Dynomite' is more dramatic with deep rose red flowers and dark, dusky foliage. Very large flower heads and stout habit all add up to the best little Sedum Terra Nova has ever introduced (www.terranovanurseries.com). Plant with Heuchera 'Crisp' series for a great match. Hardiness Zones 4-10. * Sun Parasol Garden Crimson Mandevilla — It's all about bold, beautiful color this season, and Suntory Flowers' (www.sunparasol.net) new Sun Parasol Garden Crimson Mandevilla gives you just that. As the first true bedding mandevilla for the garden, it produces 3- to 4-inch crimson blooms that are naturally compact and stay true to color. Offering high pest and disease resistance, this tropical beauty adds instant color in garden beds, containers and in hanging baskets. Plus, it doesn't require a trellis for support. * Zinnia 'Profusion Double Deep Salmon' and Zinnia 'Profusion Double Hot Cherry' — All-America Selections (AAS) announced two additional winners for the 2013 season. The two new double zinnias are a welcome addition to the successful Zinnia Profusion series from Sakata Seed Corporation. Each of these winners was trialed next to two or three similar varieties that are currently on the market. The AAS Judges grew each entry and the comparisons then did a side-by-side analysis of growth habit, disease resistance and more to determine if these were truly better than those already available to home gardeners. Only those entries with superior garden performance are granted the honor of an AAS Award. With this announcement, these varieties become available for immediate sale. Brokers and growers can purchase these varieties immediately. AAS winners are available as seeds or as young plants in lawn and garden retail stores. LI Landscape and Irrigation 5
