AMSOILBYPASSINSTALL By Tim Walton, Photos by Larry Walton BYPASS SURGERY Increased oil capacity plus improved filtration extends oil and engine life C lean oil promotes longer engine life. A simple concept well executed in the quality components of Amsoil's Single Remote Bypass oil filtration system found in the engine bay of James McCoy's Ram Dually: Bypassing a small percentage of the engine oil and routing it through an additional filter captures extremely small, wear-causing contaminants. When used in conjunction with an oil analysis program, the Amsoil system can significantly lengthen oil change intervals, saving costs in oil changes and vehicle maintenance down time. The Bypass Oil Filter doesn't replace the stock full-flow oil filter. It works in conjunction with it. Taking some of the oil from a fitting at the stock filter housing, one hose routes the oil to the Amsoil filter and another hose returns oil back into the engine via an oil fill cap with a threaded hose fitting opening. The system draws approximately 10 percent of the oil pump's capacity as it filters it with 98.7 percent efficiency at two microns. Amsoil also designed their filter as a soot removal device to remove 39 percent of soot contaminants that are less than one micron in size. Why not just replace the stock filter with one that catches more contaminates? Finer filtration restricts oil flow, which is why the Amsoil system bypasses only a little oil at a time. Better filtration means your engine is running on analytically clean oil, which can help increase engine efficiency and more importantly, extend engine life. We installed the Amsoil Single Remote Bypass oil filtration system on a 2006 RAM 3500 with 5.9L Cummins engine. The kit's quality components included plenty of hose, filter, filter mount assembly and several options in fittings. We added a nice mounting bracket from Tom Georgalos (100percentsynthetic.com) to make a simple bypass filter install even easier. Here's how we got it done: 1 I started by locating the stock oil filter housing found on the passenger side of the 2006.5 Dodge 5.9 Liter Cummins engine.
