Web Roads By Tom Kelley Speak Up! Truck Parking Survey Seeks Drivers' Input One of the most important benefits made possible by the internet is the ability for a small, grassroots cause to reach millions of people. Prior to the advent of the 'net, only the largest media companies had the ability to reach large audiences. But today, using the 'net allows a small group, or even one person to reach a mass audience, and doing good is a common theme in many of the best examples of this reach. The campaign to expand the availability of safe truck parking is an example of one such cause, and the driving force behind this cause is just one individual, Hope Rivenburg, the widow of a truck driver slain in a robbery that took place while he parked to rest at an abandoned gas station. Jason's Law, named for Hope's slain husband, seeks to expand safe truck 14 web road 0813.indd 1 parking availability through legislation. According to the Jason's Law website at jhlrivenburg.com, the legislation calls for: Construction of safe truck parking facilities & construction of public parking facilities next to commercial truck stops and travel plazas. • The use of existing facilities for truck parking, including inspection and weigh stations and park-and-ride facilities. • Construction of turnouts along the National Highway System. • Promoting the availability of publicly and privately owned parking. • Making capital improvements to public truck parking facilities currently closed on a seasonal basis. Jason's Law was passed in 2012, and is now part of the "MAP 21" www.studentdriverplacement.com August '13 7/19/13 10:01 AM
