New, flavorful stone fruits A range of 14 new, flavorful peach and nectarine varieties has been released in Spain. The varieties were developed by IRTA (Research and Technology Food and Agriculture) and Agro Selection Fruits, in collaboration with Fruit Futur. Agro Selection Fruits is a private company located in Elne, France, that creates new peach and nectarine varieties. Fruit Futur is a partnership of four Catalonian fruit-producing companies. One of the most frequent complaints made by consumers is the poor flavor of the fruit they buy, says Josep Pelegri, IRTA president. Fruits have been improving in appearance, size, and color, but not in flavor. The three partners began a classic breeding program in 2004 to obtain new types of peaches, nectarines, and flat peaches and nectarines (known as paraguayos) that have improved flavor and are well adapted to Spain's peach- producing regions in Catalonia. The breeders made 935 crosses, obtained 71,367 seeds, and evaluated 24,170 seedlings and 318 advanced selections. The 14 varieties released from the program comprise two yellow-fleshed peaches, two white-fleshed peaches, four yellow-fleshed nectarines, five white-fleshed nectarines, and one flat white-fleshed nectarine. All have high sugar levels and relatively low acidity, traits that most European consumers have said in surveys that they prefer. The varieties also have good color, are firm at harvest, mature slowly, and have good postharvest quality. Mettle launched in Canada A rysta LifeScience North America and Isagro USA, Inc., have partnered to launch the fungicide Mettle (tetraconazole) in Canada. It is designed to control powdery mildew and black rot in grapes, and powdery mildew in strawberries. The systemic product is used primarily as a protectant but can also provide control when applied after infection early in the disease life cycle. It provides residual protection of new plant tissues that emerge after application, according to Arysta. For more information, check the Web site www.mettle 125me.ca.
