Renewal & Remembrance
On July 22, 2013, members of the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET)
spent the day preserving and enhancing
the landscape at Arlington National Cemetery for the 17th annual Renewal & Remembrance beautification project.
Hundreds of PLANET members, from
coast to coast, traveled to our nation's
capital for the largest landscape industry
day of service.
On this special volunteer day, landscape industry professionals dedicated
their time to enhancing the beauty of Arlington National Cemetery by mulching,
pruning, aerating, planting, liming, and cabling trees with lightning protection on
more than 150 acres. "PLANET and its
members feel truly privileged to be able
to give back in this way to honor America's veterans and heroes each year," said
Glenn Jacobsen, Landscape Industry Certified, president of PLANET.
Many PLANET members brought
their children to Renewal & Remembrance. Children between the ages of 3
and 12 participated in a special program
where they planted perennials on the
cemetery grounds. Two children of
PLANET members also got to participate in laying a wreath at the Tomb of
the Unknown Soldier.
2013 Renewal & Remembrance facts:
* More than 400 adults and 40 children participated;
* Approximately 100 landscape industry companies and organizations were
represented;
* Participants from 34 states;
* 66 tons of lime applied to 154 acres;
* 45 acres of turf aerated;
* Seven trees pruned, cabled and braced;
* Lightning protection for six trees;
* Columbarium and Administrative
Building, and Receiving Vault irrigation
systems updated.
Legislative Day on the Hill
PLANET's annual Legislative Day on
the Hill, designed to bring attention to issues facing our industry, was a huge success
this year: 193 people met with their legislators or staff, which is a 60 percent increase over last year. The event started on
July 22, with briefings and an address
about the state of the Congress by keynote
speaker, NPR White House Correspondent, Ari Shapiro. The next morning, more
than 200 people gathered to hear Rep.Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) speak before setting
out for meetings with legislators or staff
from their local districts to talk about some
of the issues affecting the industry, including overregulation, NPDES permits,
H-2B, and Lyme disease. The timing of this
event was great because the week prior,
Rep. Rob Wittman (R-Va.) introduced a
favorable H-2B bill (H.R. 2765). Attendees
had the opportunity to ask their legislators
to sign on to the bill.
PLANET members and members of
partner organizations met with legislative
office staff from 25 states.
PLANET partnered with the following associations for Legislative Day on the
Hill: TCIA, ASCA, and SIMA. The event's
Platinum sponsors were Caterpillar Inc.,
and New Holland Construction.
