dateline the ground in Connecticut. Twenty-seven percent of Yankee Natural Gas' entire pipeline system, 19 percent of Connecticut Natural Gas' system, and 30 percent of Southern Connecticut Gas' system is made of outdated pipe, according to the companies' reports. Yankee Gas, in a filing with the state Department of Public Utility Control in January 2011, estimated it would take 67 years to replace its remaining inventory of cast iron gas mains and nearly 15 years to replace its bare steel gas mains.  Yankee's own data show the rate of leaks in its system, has more than doubled in a 20 year period. Sen. Markey's report states that Nstar Gas, who recently merged with Connecticut based Northeast Utilities (NU), customers in Massachusetts paid $109 to $229 million for unused natural gas that leaked into the atmosphere. Herb stated that "DEEP must take pause and reconsider the CES and their support of the state's gas utilities request to expand in Connecticut, until we are assured that any and all leaking natural gas lines are fixed." U.S. Biodiesel Production Reached a Record Level in May 2013 U.S. biodiesel production in May 2013 reached a record level of 111 million gallons, according to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration on July 30. Production came from 116 active biodiesel plants with operable capacity of 2.2 billion gallons per year. Production for the first five months of 2013 was 449 million gallons, an increase of 17 million gallons from the same period in 2012. There were 3,427 million pounds of feedstocks consumed for biodiesel production during the period from January-May 2013, giving a ratio of 7.6 pounds of feedstock per gallon of biodiesel produced. Of the total biodiesel feedstocks, 1,838 million pounds (about 54%) were soybean oil. The use of biodiesel as a motor fuel is Calendar of Events supported by federal mandates for biodiesel blending under the Renewable Fuel Standard program. Under this program, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency sets annual targets for the use of biodiesel and other biofuel categories, such as advanced and total biofuels, which can also be satisfied through additional biodiesel use. Biodiesel blenders are also currently eligible for a federal tax credit of $1 per gallon blended. New Technical Director Fortifies Biodiesel Team On track to again break annual production records this year, the National Biodiesel Board and industry welcome Scott Fenwick as the newest staff member. Fenwick brings more than 20 years' experience in the industry to bolster an already strong team. "As America's first advanced biofuel to hit one billion gallons annual production, biodiesel has begun to break the petroleum stronghold on transportation fuel. That success would not be possible without a quality product and a robust technical program," said CEO Joe Jobe. "Scott is exactly the right ingredient to fortify this excellent team and maintain biodiesel's sustainable volume growth." Fenwick is the current Chairman of the BQ9000 Commission and is an officer of the ASTM Committee D02 that presides over the current biodiesel specifications and test methods. Fenwick has spent the majority of his career working within the fuel inspection industry. He has managed several independent fuel labs within the Gulf Coast, including an active technical role for global biofuel specifications. In addition to having been previously employed by ADM as their biofuels technical services representative, his most recent experience was with Inspectorate America Corporation as their biofuels technical business manager.  Fenwick provided quality assurance services to companies involved with production, blending and Open House September 12, 2013 From 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM Sid Harvey Store 26 1650 E. As technical director Fenwick takes on the day-to-day management responsibilities of running the technical program and expanding NBB's technical reach to better match the growing industry needs and challenges. The move introduces the Technical Director role as a staff position in the Jefferson City office and elevates long-time biodiesel industry technical leader Steve Howell as senior technical advisor. The change will more fully utilize Howell's senior level of experience to continue the outstanding progress he has forged for biodiesel with third parties and global technical committees. Adding Fenwick to the NBB staff roster further builds on changes announced earlier this summer that demonstrate the biodiesel industry's growing significance in our transportation energy picture. Lindsay Fitzgerald was brought on to fill a new position overseeing regulatory affairs in Washington, D.C. She previously worked for the Environmental Protection Agency, where she served as a specialist in the Office of Transportation and Air Quality working on the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). NBB has also hired former U.S. Rep. Kenney Hulshof on an interim basis for direct outreach to key contacts in the House.
