Did you know? EDITOR'S NOTES Nancy Estes, MBA, CAE Executive Director/Editor E very week, I research the web and business periodicals to find information that might be useful to the IDA members. There is always an avalanche of news and statistics to delve through. What does that mean? No one person possesses all the information about the heavy equipment industry – especially in this age where techniques, standards and requirements change "on a dime." The need for a continual inflow of data presents one of the many challenges to business owners throughout the world. "No man is an island." I dare anyone to successfully create a company by yourself. It took a lot of people to get your company where it is now, and it will take a multitude of new people to keep your door open, much less advance to new heights. Your company has to be a top-notch working machine. You have to have a lot of solid customers you can trust. And there is an even larger group of people that exist between your staff and the customer, i.e., shipping, banking, insurance, packing. At this point, you are ready to stop reading this article, believ- ing that a person who works in the IDA office could not teach you anything you do not already know. And you would be right. You know better than I the truth of these lines. So why would any of you pass up the opportunity to visit for days with a huge reserve of knowledge and make strong, reliable business relationships at the IDA Convention? Did you know that even if you already know everyone in IDA, relationships need renewal to remain strong? Did you know that you deserve to travel to a beautiful location with your spouse or significant other at discounted rates and have some fun? Did you know that if you attend the IDA Convention and visit with everyone you see, it is impossible not to find out something that helps you improve your business? What are you waiting for? Go to page 17 of this issue of the Universal...and register! (I just had to throw in another "plug" for the 2013 IDA Convention and Trade Show.) That aside, one of my personal challenges is communicating to you how important each of you is to the Independent Distributors Association. Each of you has so much experience and knowledge. For many of the companies, that experience and knowledge has been derived from more than one generation in the equipment business. When I see convention attendees hesitant to approach people or when I speak to a great company on the phone that doesn't have time for convention or, worse, when they feel like they are not large enough to attend, I see a waste...gold mines waiting to be tapped. Those of you who decide to come to the great country of Canada, I will see you soon. To every member company that chooses not to join us, I hope you will contact me sometime to let me know how your company is doing and how IDA can be of service. Did you know that each and every member of IDA is equally important to the success of our association and, by working with other members, is equally important to the survival of the industry as a whole? All the best to you and yours! Nancy IDA CONVENTION AND TRADE SHOW 2013 Banff • October 9-11 4 2014 Chicago 2015 Miami IDA UNIVERSAL September-October 2013
