EdnoteCultured Fall_Layout 1 10/9/13 2:12 PM Page 30 Welcome Note Welcome to our Visionaries Issue! This issue's cover subject is a true visionary. Just weeks before Eugenio Lopez, the Mexican mega-collector, opens the doors to his David Chipperfield-designed private museum, he invited us into his L.A. home for a rare look at his hefty personal collection and for a conversation about the new museum—a dream that is five years in the making. Silvia Karman Cubiñá, our contributor and the chief curator and executive director of the Bass Museum of Art, engages in a dialogue with Lopez about the important role of architecture in museums, Cy Twombly and Mexico City's rich cultural heritage. Equally impressive are the extraordinary group of architects assembled in this issue. These women prove that great architecture knows no gender. Our contributing writer Raul Barreneche interviews some of the most talented architects working today, who, as he notes, "just happen to be women." New contributor Ted Loos sits down with Annabelle Selldorf, the darling of the art set, who spends much of her time designing for powerful men and claims, "It's not so much that I contradict—I interpret. I think that, sometimes, it may be easier to do that as a woman." Judging by the work achieved by Selldorf and the women in "Major Creators"—who are all driven, intelligent, thoughtful and conceiving awe-inspiring structures—there's hope the field will become truly blind to gender. We have also amassed a group of designers, architects and artists who are just beginning to make their mark. For these future visionaries, their passion is palpable and we know we will be seeing a lot more from them in years to come. Last but not least, as the flurry of excitement begins to build for Art Basel and Design Miami/, we take a moment to catch up with formlessfinder, the young duo who were awarded the very prestigious commission for the entrance pavilion to Design Miami/. Our first look at their concept is on page 64. Keep in mind, our Cultured dialogue continues in between issues at culturedmag.com.
