BRENT REDMOND TRANSPORTATION
Continued from page 9
Peterbilts, all powered by the PACCAR
MX-13. Redmond reports that the change
in equipment has resulted in a documented 12 percent improvement in fuel economy, a higher caliber of driver quality
and a cab design with improved visibility
that he believes contributes to the firm's
sterling CSA scores, which measure single
digits in all the major categories.
Additionally, his maintenance costs
have been reduced sharply. The fleet's
uptime is such that drivers fully expect to
put on as many as 3,200 legal miles a week
and he's already compliant with coming
changes to California's emissions standards, among the strictest in the nation.
"When it comes to equipment, you
really have to use everything in your bag to
scale your business properly," he says. "It's
all about pennies per mile.

"We have trucks staying on the road
now. That's how we make money and
how drivers make money. What we sell
is hours of service. You can't waste them
in the shop."
For Redmond, the switch to Peterbilt
is both symbolic of and a major con-
tributor to the company's renaissance.
"I think we're very well positioned for
the future, and we're likely to continue
doing some purchasing. Money is cheaper
than maintenance right now. As a result,
these new Model 579s make a lot of sense
— and they'll continue to do so."
