30 | Overdrive | February 2014 Reuben Dupsky Fremont Contract Carriers Inc. R euben Dupsky, or Buster to family members, has been trucking for almost 38 years. As he's become a veteran, he's found ways to share his experience and help other drivers and the industry at large. Dupsky, 65, of Fremont, Neb., who drives for Fremont Contract Carriers Inc., says he reads trucking news in magazines and on Facebook during his free time, and stays tuned to SiriusXM's Road Dog Trucking channel. He takes that industry knowledge, combined with his experience, and talks to younger driv- ers "about the industry and their safety" and answers their questions. He also has a website, TruckDriverDiary.com, where he publishes videos from the road that feature his commentary. "It makes me just feel proud that I'm involved in the trucking industry, and I try to do better about talking to people about it," he says. "We are good people out here." In addition to trucking, Dupsky is passionate about giving back as a board member and a participant in the Ne- braska Special Olympics yearly trucking convoy, which raises awareness and funds for the organization. He also maintains a pen pal-type relationship with one of the athletes he was paired with when he got involved nine years ago. Dupsky hauls general commodities and enjoys the flexibility of the long haul. "I don't care what I haul as long as I've got something to do," he says, and Fremont does a good job of giving him miles. In his 13 years with the company, he's racked up quite a few accolades: Driver of the Month in April 2008, safe driving awards for 12 con- secutive years and Nebraska Trucking Association Driver of the Month in August 2011. "I like to park at a truck stop and get up, clean up, take a shower, have a healthy breakfast and then go to work," says Dupsky, whose over-the-road routine "gives me more time to stop and take care of myself, eat right and properly get exercise, find a safe space to park again at nighttime and do the same thing the next day." Top trucker Company Driver of the Year to be named in Dallas BY KATHLEEN BUCCLEUGH Dupsky is active in the Nebraska Special Olympics convoy. T hree finalists are compet- ing for the 2013 Com- pany Driver of the Year award in the annual contest spon- sored by the Truckload Carriers Association and Overdrive. They will attend TCA's annual meeting March 23-26 in Dallas, where the winner will be announced. Likewise, a winner chosen from three finalists for the Owner-Operator of the Year award will be announced at the meeting. The finalists will be profiled in the March Overdrive. Winners of both contests will be featured in more depth in subsequent issues of Overdrive. Top_Trucker.indd 30 1/28/14 10:59 PM
