Signing a letter of intent to go play golf at an NCAA school, I can only imagine is an extremely memorable moment in any junior's golf career. It signifies a long and dedicated journey to a new challenging chapter of their sporting life. Matt Williams, one of the juniors at Pinebrook G&CC, signed his letter on Wednesday, Nov.13th. He's off to the University of Houston next August. Matt's drive for improvement is insatiable and his goals aren't limited to college. He dreams big and bold dreams but for now, golf as a U of H Cougar is where he'll continue to sharpen his skills and test his metal. Matt has made great strides in the last couple of years with high finishes and he wins in some very well-respected tournaments. With those successes has come an invitation to Canada's developmental team, along with opportunities to travel the globe getting further international experience. Watching his progress has been exciting and educational. Sure, Matt has talent but he's the hardest worker at the club, as well. It definitely makes it easier when Juniors want to know why they aren't as good as Matt, practice, not Allen Iverson's rant about praaaaactice. This is not a game, it's praaaaactice! Allen, I hope you aren't a golfer. Now go hit the range or putting green and get after it, take what you've learned and ingrain it. If you want to be as good as Matt, get to work! There are numerous reasons why Matt has picked Houston to go to school but what I really liked was the big picture. Matt believes Houston can take him beyond college golf and onto loftier pursuits, but for now the highest of platforms would be that of a national championship. you are going to dream, go all the way! Houston calls this Project 17. Project 17, what a great name and I had no idea what it meant the first time I heard it. Houston has won 16 National Championships in golf, that was in 30 years. From 1956 to 1985 they were considered golf's dynasty and then the drought began in 1986. With no hope in sight dropping to as low as 175th in the nation, the abyss was dark I'm sure. But the dream has begun of a resurgence back to greatness, traditions regained.
