6 NOVEMBER 2014 GOOD FRUIT GROWER www.goodfruit.com Varietal confusion Dear Good Fruit Grower: T hanks for the great articles on cider production (Good Fruit Grower, October, 2014). However, they did reflect some continuing confusion about variety identity. Many of us early planters of European cider varieties were fooled by nursery misidentification, which unfor- tunately continues. For example, I planted a number of the trees sold as "Foxwhelp," pictured on page 20. We now refer to it as "Fauxwhelp." True Foxwhelp is a small apple. The juice produced by the Fauxwhelp produces a decent cider, but it bears no similarity to true Foxwhelp. Also, the other apples pictured on page 20 are actu- ally Porter's Perfection. Harry Master's Jersey does not produce the fused fruit, as pictured, which is common in Porter's. Tim Steury Potlatch, Idaho Editor's note: Thanks, Tim. The apples pictured on page 20 of our October issue were indeed Porter's Perfection, not Harry Master's Jersey, as Tim Steury points out. Peter Ringsrud, at Snowdrift Cider Company, confirms that the Foxwhelp variety referred to in the article is the variety commonly grown in Washington, which turned out not to be the true Foxwhelp and has different characteristics. We value feedback from readers and regret any confu- sion that the cider article and photo might have created. IN THE BOX Want to share your opinion?
