afarge Canada Inc. has 10 active ag-
gregate operations around Calgary,
which include five mobile plants, two
fixed wash plants, two mobile wash
plants, and the company's flagship operation
at Spy Hill. Spy Hill, a 640-acre property with
a large fixed plant and several mobile plants,
is located in the northwest corner of Calgary
where a huge deposit of sand and gravel was
left behind by glaciers thousands of years ago.
All other major local producers also have gravel
operations in the Spy Hill area, which makes
this part of the city a key source for aggregates.

industry in the United States experienced eco-
nomic woes beginning in 2009, the Calgary
area has been growing by leaps and bounds,
both in population and in construction. Much
of this growth can be attributed to the influx of
people required to lead and run development in
the oil sands of northern Alberta.
The northwest corner of Calgary is developing
quickly with both residential and commercial
construction, which translates into an increased
demand for construction materials. The nearby
location of Spy Hill is convenient for the con-
Lafarge's Spy Hill
Plant has been
providing most of
the materials used
in recent major
projects in Calgary.
