AGGREGATES MANAGER February 2015 5 by Therese Dunphy, Editor-in-Chief tdunphy@randallreilly.com JE SUIS CHARLIE A lthough I typically write about aggregates-specific issues on this page, I'm taking a bit of a break this month to talk to you about the folks on the other side of these pages, professional journalists such as those who write the stories you read in each issue. For journalists, recent years have been full of challenges and opportunities. For example, we spend a lot of time learning how to incorporate emerging technology in how we present information to you. In 1996, we launched www.aggman.com to accompany the magazine as its very first issue was published — and were the first in the aggregates industry to do so. Today, the ways to share information grow on a daily basis. The website now includes photo galleries and videos from sites we visit. Daily newsletters, Facebook posts, and tweets are all part of how we share what is happening in the industry, especially when we are at a site or a show (be sure to check out our coverage during AGG1). And you've responded. Our Facebook page (www.facebook/aggregates manager) even has more likes than the magazine has print subscribers. Clearly, the Aggregates Manager community has a life outside of the magazine pages as well as within it. As a result, we enjoy new ways to engage with our traditional readers, as well as new ones. Online metrics show us that, while our focus is on the domestic aggregates industry, our audience is an increasingly global community. That is one reason why I traveled to Hillhead last summer to get an international perspective on an aggregates- specific trade show. And, as I write this editorial, I'm clearing my desk for a flight to Paris to attend a pre-show event for May's Intermat expo. While Paris is one of my favorite cities to visit, the recent shooting of Charlie Hebdo editors, cartoonists, and police officers cast a different light on this trip. I'm reminded of the importance of messages journalists share with their readers — whether to encourage safer, more environmentally friendly operations or to defend the rights of free speech and serve as thought leaders. I'm reminded of how brave that staff was in refusing to bow to attempts to instill fear and how a nation rallied around its fallen. And, I'm reminded of the words of former New York Tribune Editor Horace Greeley: "Journalism will kill you, but it will keep you alive while you're at it." February 2015 Vol. 20, No. 2 3 takeaways from this issue: 1 2 3 A hydraulic ripper blade on an excavator can provide an alternative to blasting, page 16. Small, unmanned aerial systems can take millions of photographic images every 2 to 10 centimeters during flight, page 23. Reducing material spillage on haul roads can extend tire life by 40 percent, page 28. aggman.com /AggregatesManager @AggMan_editor Editorial Editor-in-Chief: Therese Dunphy Editorial Director: Marcia Gruver Doyle Online Editor: Wayne Grayson Online Managing Editor: Brian Ethridge editorial@aggman.com Design & Production Art Director: Sandy Turner, Jr. Production Designer: Timothy Smith Advertising Production Manager: Linda Hapner production@aggman.com Construction Media VP of Sales, Construction Media: Joe Donald sales@randallreillyconstruction.com 3200 Rice Mine Rd NE Tuscaloosa, AL 35406 800-633-5953 randallreilly.com Corporate Chairman/CEO: Mike Reilly President: Brent Reilly Chief Process Officer: Shane Elmore Chief Administration Officer: David Wright Senior Vice President, Sales: Scott Miller Senior Vice President, Editorial and Research: Linda Longton Vice President of Events: Stacy McCants Vice President, Audience Development: Prescott Shibles Vice President, Digital Services: Nick Reid Vice President, Marketing: Julie Arsenault For change of address and other subscription inquiries, please contact: aggregatesmanager@halldata.com.
