FROM THE EDITOR Editor John Kmitta jkmitta@specialtyim.com www.arborage.com ARBOR AGE n SPRING 2015 5 The International Tree Climbing Championship (ITCC) has traditionally been held during the late summer in conjunction with the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Conference and Trade Show. However, 2015 marks a departure from this format with ITCC now at the center of a separate event this spring. ITCC will be part of an event taking place March 19-23 in Tampa, Fla. (the ITCC climbing events will be held March 21-22 at Rowlett Park in Tampa, Fla.). In addition to the climbing events, ISA has organized a collection of educational workshops to be held during ITCC. Workshops will be held March 20-22, and include: ■ The Ultimate Test of Value: Plant Appraisal presented by Joe Samnik and Lori Ballard ■ TCIA/ASTI Chain Saw and Chipper Safety presented by Tim Walsh (offered in English and Spanish) ■ Pruning Young Trees presented by Ed Gilman and Jordan Upcavage ■ Cabling, Bracing, and Lightning Protection presented by Norm Easey and Jordan Upcavage ■ Diagnostics — Bugs and Rots presented by A.D. Ali and Jason Smith To view the workshop schedule and register, visit www.isa-arbor.com/events/treeclimbingchampionships/ workshops.aspx The deadline to register for the workshops is March 6. A bonus event, the Cost of Not Maintaining Trees Symposium, will be held at the University of South Florida March 18 and 19. An Arbor Fair and Expo will also be held during ITCC. The Arbor Fair is an event for the general public that focuses on environmental issues and promoting proper tree care. It will feature educational exhibits, information sessions, tree demonstrations, interactive children's activities, and much more. The Expo portion will showcase industry companies, manufacturers, and suppliers and their products. ISA ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AND TRADE SHOW I will be interested to see the impact of moving ITCC to spring (and separating it from the ISA Annual Conference and Trade Show). That said, the ISA show will still go on, and will be held Aug. 9-11 at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center in Kissimmee, Fla. The event allows arborists and urban foresters come together with top researchers and educators to learn the latest in research, technology, and innovations in arboriculture and urban forestry. A welcome reception on the trade show fl oor will be held Aug. 9 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., and the trade show will run in full on Aug. 10 and 11 from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. each day. STIHL TOUR DES TREES It should also be noted that the STIHL Tour des Trees, which typically culminates at the ISA Conference and Trade Show, will actually be held Oct. 25-31, 2015 (with the route running from Orlando to Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). Tree plantings and community engagement are hallmarks of every Tour. Since 1992, the Tour des Trees has generated more than $7.2 million and has funded a variety of research projects and educational programs for budding tree care professionals. To learn more, visit the grant and scholarship archive pages at www.treefund.org. Registration information for the Tour can be found at www.stihltourdestrees.org. In the past, the ITCC event and the Tour des Trees have helped boost the ISA Conference and Show and combine to create a major industry event. Splitting these key components into three separate events could impact all three. But perhaps it gives industry professionals a chance to choose the event (or time frame) that best suits them and their schedules. Plus, it gives you a great excuse to spend a good chunk of 2015 in Florida. ITCC Ready to Spring
