Outside the Box With her new online gallery, Grey Area, Kyle DeWoody invites artists to defy boundaries and tap into their inner designer. BY TALI JAFFE Kyle DeWoody has spent her life immersed in art. Her father, Jim, is a well-known painter and sculptor and her mother, Beth Rudin, is an esteemed collector. But it was objects that Kyle was drawn to. "From a young age I saved plastic wrap- pings just because I liked the shape of them," she explains. Now DeWoody is coveting some slightly more impressive objects—those designed by Michele Oka Doner, Tom Sachs and Kiki Smith, among them. But un- like the little plastic wrappings she tucked away into a drawer, De- Woody is making a name for herself commissioning and selling these artist-designed wares through her online gallery, Grey Area. "When I moved back to New York after college, I couldn't find a job that fit my ideals," she says, "so I decided to start one of my own." In partnership with Manish Vora, whose website Artlog is must-read for the gallery-going set, de Woody launched Grey Area earlier this summer. "It's not as serious as the art world," she says. "Here artists can come up with an idea and there's a venue for it. It's not about fitting into a repertoire, or how will col- lectors react. It's just a fun side project that's about col- laborating." shopgreyarea.com Kyle DeWoody; at left, Vadis Turner's Jeweled Oragns. FASHION HOUSEFrom Diane to Dior, fashion designers are lending their names and talents to hotel projects. Here are a few outfits to be seen in. BY DAVID SOKOL J'adore New York The partnership between St. Regis New York and Dior dates to 1991, when the midtown Manhattan palace launched its first Dior Suite. The 2011 ver- sion is 1,700 square feet of understated femininity. Artwork by Bil Donovan and Fifth Avenue views accent whispering gray and delicate ornamentation. 66 CULTURED It's a Wrap The Diane von Furstenberg suites for Claridge's represent the first time the London land- mark has worked with a fashionista (past designer collaborators include David Collins and Thierry Despont), and von Furstenberg's first interiors commission. Maison Margiela The Belgian house has expanded into interior design commissions since 2009. Yet this renovation of the Maison Champs Elysées shows how characteristic asymmetrical construction, minimalist mate- rial palettes and surrealist accents translate into three dimensions rather faithfully. Dreaming in Color The chain of hotels launched in Edinburgh, where doormen wear Missoni kilts, and a sec- ond property more recently opened in Kuwait. Zigzags, stripes and other Technicolor patterns clad every imagina- ble surface, and guests applaud the equally detail-oriented service.
