Galleries Galore We caught up with some of this year's designers and dealers to preview what they have in store for Miami. BY TALI JAFFE Modernity Michael Young's PSi sculpture, at right, was a study for the PSi Tower that he was recently commissioned to design in his adopted Hong Kong home. Here Young tells us about this new work. What brought you to Hong Kong in the first place? I fell into it. I was spending more and more time here. I loved the energy, the factories and the speed. I had a lot of projects here so I decided to stay and have never looked back You've said that mass production design as industrial art interests you most. So share with us what then prompted your limited edition work on view at Design Miami/. I left college 20 years ago; this was a time in London when design art was called decorative art, there was one gallery called Themes and Variations, and about five designers—Tom [Dixon], Ron [Arad], Andre [Puttman], Mutant Waste, Mark Brazier Jones. So I was born into making one-offs more as a way of survival than anything else; mass production was the dream. This show is the result of playing with ideas that were fun and could not be exploited into mass production. Tell us about the PSi Tower. It has some pretty fantastic technology- with-nature features. I guess it's a pun on PSI Power, it was the part of an exploration into old Chinese mathematics and new computer software and how to create endless surfaces. Some of the other pieces on show also have naturally occurring shapes within their design like the hexagon skin of the Tittot Cylinder Vase. Has nature always played a role in your work? The shape is not important to me on a personal level, it's about the exploration of materials and structures within it. CULTURED 55
