SafeHouse updates unique spy features or 50 years, would-be James Bonds, Mata Haris and spy kids have launched "secret missions" at the Safe- House, an iconic restaurant and bar that is a Milwaukee must-visit. "Safe House" is a term used in the international espio- nage vernacular to mean a meeting place where agents can take refuge. Milwaukee's SafeHouse opened its door in 1966, gaining national and international recogni- tion through movies (Major League), on the History Chan- nel and in articles in numer- ous publications and online. In June 2015, the SafeHouse was sold to Milwaukee-based Marcus Corp. by founder and owner David Baldwin. Bald - win, who passed away a few months later, was still known as the SafeHouse "station chief" in retirement. He will be recognized in October when the SafeHouse officially cele - 06 keymilwaukee.com brates 50 years. Marcus Corp., a hotel/hospitality and theatre operator, plans to open other SafeHouse locations by creating a version that makes sense in other cities, while retaining the essence of the Milwau - kee original. While the SafeHouse was closed during Feb- ruary 2016 "to elevate the level of fun and instill new intrigue," the es- sence of the SafeHouse stays the same. Visitors still find secret entrances and exits, pass- words, hidden cameras, restroom booby traps, a maze of hallways and "sectors" and spy-themed drinks and food. And while some of the memorabilia that covered the walls for decades has been ar - chived and cleaned, the vast majority of it is back. Updates include the addition of new interac- tive elements to features like the World Orienta- tion map and face-lifts for the Interpol Bar and the secret Escape Route. The retail section is now at the front of the restaurant. Apparel items feature an updated . Make sure to try one of the SafeHouse's signature cocktails.
