Half of the spots on the Brewers' roster now are occupied by new faces and the team that takes the field will be far younger than in the past. All-Star Ryan Braun (who is a year older than the new GM) is healthy and again playing his fa- vored left-field position. And former Houston Astro veteran Chris Carter is at first base, a position the Brewers have had difficulty filling. Principal owner Mark Attanasio pointed to an exceptionally positive attitude in the Brewers' spring-training clubhouse. "I had déjà vu back to my first year as owner because, even though we had a num - ber of veterans, it was all new for me," he com- mented in an interview with Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "I'm liking everything I see right now. The energy is really good. These guys are hungry. I think the veterans are embracing mentoring some of the younger guys. It's very positive." In his first full season as manager of his hometown team, Craig Counsell also won pre-season commen - dation from his boss. Attanasio lauded Coun- sell's approach to the team, saying he plans to take the manager's emphasis on "staying connected and really being the best they each can be" back to his Los Angeles investment firm. Financially, the chang - es brought through trades of veteran players reportedly have dropped the team's payroll down from more than $100 million to $60 million. That's expected to be one of the lowest among the 30 major-league clubs. In other words, there's room in the Brewers' budget for even more positive changes.
