The 2012 ISA Annual International Conference, Trade Show, and International Tree Climbing Championship (ITCC) will be held in Portland, Ore. from Aug. 11-15, 2012. The ISA Annual Conference and Trade Show is the biggest gathering of researchers, educators, practicing arborists and urban foresters from around the world. In addition to drawing top speakers to present on the latest research and techniques, the ISA conference provides a forum for the open exchange of ideas, emerging technology, and the latest products and services. The keynote speaker at the event will be Peter H. Raven, president emeritus of the Missouri Botanical Garden and one of the world's leading botanists and advocates of conservation and biodiversity. Raven has written numerous books and publications including "Biology of Plants," a well-known textbook in botany. He currently works as the Engelmann Professor of Botany at Washington University in St. Louis. Tree Academy Workshops will be held on Saturday and Sunday, August 11-12. Education sessions will be held Aug. 13-15 at the Oregon Convention Center. Session topics include trends in soil sustainability, arboricultural tools and techniques, collaboration, sustainability in tree planting, tree risk assessment, sustainability in urban forestry, urban tree monitoring, managing mature trees, urban forestry innovations, the nursery industry and urban trees, arboriculture and history, sustainable practices below ground, strategies for communicating, arborists as athletes, and much more. Climbers' Corner sessions will be held Aug. 13-14, and will cover topics such as traversing methods, safe pruning techniques, chain saw safety, single-line rescue techniques, precision felling, rigging, and more. The 2012 International Tree Climbing Championship (ITCC) will also be held in Portland August 11 - 12. The Masters' Challenge Qualifying Events will take place Saturday, Aug. 11 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and then the Masters' Challenge Finals will be held Sunday, Aug. 12 from8 a.m. to 4 p.m. ITCC events will take place at Laurelhurst Park, Portland, Ore. Bus transportation will be provided between the Oregon Convention Center and Laurelhurst Park. Location and pick- up times will be posted soon.
