52 • JUNE 2012 • WORLD FENCE NEWS New guy doesn't dig augers continued from page 50 man has been gone for 10 hours, and I'm about to borrow a neighbor's mule and go looking for him. By now, if he stole the truck, it's probably been cut up and is on its way to South America for spare parts. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Anyway, right about this time he rolls into the yard. He says he just put in the hardest day of his life. "Did you get 'em all dug?" I ask. "I got five dug, finally," he says. "That post hole digger of yours is a real hernia maker! I don't know how you ever get anything done with it!" ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★ ALUMINIZED TIES ALUMINUM TIES ALUMINUM HOG RINGS BARBED WIRE VINYL TIES DOMESTIC KEENER-DUPONT WIRE K Look for the K-D label at your local supplier! I'm men- tally picking out a spot on the back 40 to bury this guy on. Kill him I will, I just ain't figured out how yet. "Five holes in 10 hours in solid granite I can live with," I holler. "Five holes in sand is ridiculous!" "It's that damn digger," he says. "That spiral thing on the bottom wouldn't let it hog out any sand! Chuck showed me how to use it, with little jabs in and out. It's a killer! I'd rather use them other diggers with the wood handles, but Chuck said that heavy sucker would do it quicker and easier." We had just put a new clutch in it, and a new clutter blade, and it had worked fine up until now. When I in- form him of this, he replies, "What clutch?" All kind of silly thoughts enter my mind at this point, especially the cus- tomer's remarks about the helper "pounding away" and "weird way of doing it." 1/8" thick material attaches to existing chain link fence, scaffolding or any custom built support I says to myself, "Self, he didn't do what I'm thinking he did, did he? He did, didn't he!?" I tell him to bring the digger over into the light, and show me how he used it. The auger's got a 15 de- gree bend in it, and the handles on the power head ain't quite in the same place the manufacturer put 'em. He raises it up to shoulder height and slams it into the ground, flips it side- ways, and the fishtail throws up a few grains of sand. He raises if up to shoulder height again and I holler, "OK, OK, I get the picture!!" I still got murder on my mind, but %% it's gonna be a double murder. I'm gonna kill my employee for pulling a stunt like this on a new guy, and I'm gonna kill the new guy for being stu- pid enough to fall for it! It's a miracle he got five holes dug! However, I cool off a little when I recall that I only got two holes dug my first day on the job, when I put a left- hand auger onto a right-hand power head. I want to laugh and cry at the same time... Laugh at the unintentional stu- pidity I was also once guilty of, and cry at the cost of having the power head and auger repaired. Well, what do you do in a case like this? My boss chased me 15 blocks trying to whop me with a shovel. I fortunately run as fast as I have to, not as fast as I can on such occa- sions. My solution was to promote him to vice-president in charge of post holes. When we get a job a few days later where the ground is full of petrified tree roots two feet thick, he eats 'em up with the hand digger, and considers himself lucky that I don't make him use that "damned auger thing." He's happy, I'm happy, and I no longer have to do it! All right! Hip hip hooray!
