600+ rowers gear up for River Challenge
COLLEGIATE AND CLUB ROWERS from across the nation will tackle the Milwaukee and Menomonee rivers in downtown Milwaukee during the 12th Annual Milwaukee River Challenge from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15.
Racing four-oared and eight-oared Olympic row- ing shells, the teams will begin at 25th and Canal streets on the Menomonee River, head east to the Milwaukee River junction and turn north to Schlitz Park just below Pleasant Street. The three- mile stretch is a difficult course, demanding pre- cise blade work and team communication as row- ers pass beneath more than a dozen bridges.
Spectators are encouraged to view the race on the Harley-Davidson Museum grounds, along the Milwaukee RiverWalk and at Schlitz Park. Also providing spectacular vantage points of the com- petition are the many riverside restaurants along the course as well as the many overhead bridges. Live commentary of each race will be broadcast at Schlitz Park.
Teams will compete in open and junior classes in both men's and women's 4-oared and 8-oared divisions. Last year's race brought more than 650 rowers and 100 boats, including teams.
Expect to see teams practicing on the course Friday, Sept. 14. For more information, visit www.milwaukeeriverchallenge.com
