LET US HELP YOU WITH THE next step. Understanding the Levels of Care you and Your Loved Ones may Need By Betty Fischer When choosing a place for you or your loved one to call home, knowing what to look for is key. Th ere are basically two dif- ferent levels of senior care assisted-living environments recognized by the State of Wisconsin and governed by the Bureau of Quality Assurance: Residential Care Apartment Complex (RCAC) and Com- munity Based Residential Facility (CBRF), which includes memory care and/or frail elderly care with enhanced care. A RCAC is the most independent level of assisted living. Residents typically re- side in their own studio, one-bedroom or two-bedroom apartment and are free to come and go as they please. RCACs are designed to assist residents with the basic activities of daily living such as bathing, medication administration, dressing and more. Call systems are available for those who may need individual or emergency as- sistance. Residents are allowed to receive up to 28 hours of supportive and personal care per week and have as much indepen- dence as they want with the peace of mind that personal care and support services are available. A CBRF is the next level of care. When West Allis • Monona • Middleton www.heritagesenior.com Greenfield • New Berlin Menomonee Falls • Eau Claire a resident meets/exceeds the 28 hours of care, he or she could transfer to this higher level of need. Studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom living spaces may be avail- able depending upon the community you choose. Some CBRF communities focus on memory care issues for individuals di- agnosed with dementia-related condi- tions. Some are specifi c to frail elderly residents, which are those individuals who have greater physical needs but do not need a secure environment or all the skills of a nursing home. You can also fi nd locations that cater to both. CBRFs can provide up to three hours of skilled nursing per week. Explore the options available to you and your loved ones for safe, secure and com- fortable care, and you'll fi nd a home that will offer you peace of mind through your twilight years.
