play in your free time A Blank Canvas Introducing a new voice from our art community By Karin Wolf It is with humble gratitude that we acknowledge Pete Lundberg for contributing 100 inspiring Art Throb columns. Although he is leaving a legacy filled with wise, witty, and thought-provoking words, we are proud to introduce Karin Wolf of the Madison Arts Commission, who will be highlighting visionaries from our local arts community each month. Thank you, Pete—and welcome to BRAVA, Karin! Give me a new beginning over a final victory any day. Being swept away by the endless possibilities of the unknown always propels me to action and gives me hope. What I'm trying to say is: I am thrilled to be taking on this new role, and to embark on an entirely new journey with BRAVA and with all of you! The way I see it, art helps make meaning of our complicated existence and artists are the purveyors of our collective mean- ing-making. They engage our community in myriad ways, from teaching and running galleries to holding jobs sometimes entirely unrelated to the arts. As the arts program administrator for the Madison Arts Commission, I spend my days unpeeling red tape so artists can go about making this world brighter for everyone. The Madison area boasts a bountiful group of artistic women who are churn- ing senselessness into meaning, sorrow into joy, and struggle into power. Each month I hope to illuminate everyday luminaries and, in turn, honor the creative power in all of us. I intend to share stories from the vast variety of women who show us the path to our own strength and fullness by bring- ing creativity to life; erecting a giant beehive made of hay on the Capitol square, placing a taxidermy chicken coated in graphite adjacent a Chippendale cabinet in a museum collection, or building a house-sized sand bucket along the Mississippi. No matter the size, medium or method, I believe we all stand to learn from the eclectic female artists in our community. Thus, I look forward to spotlighting some of the most creative Karin Wolf is the arts program administrator for the Madison Arts Commission. Published by Picador, $18 Jackie After O By Tina Cassidy While other accounts delve into the famed first lady's life, pre- and post-Camelot, this unique biography focuses on just one year in the inspir- ing life of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis as she transformed her personal and professional worlds for good. Published by Harper Collins, $25 Coco Chanel: The Legend and the Life By Justine Picardie While Coco Chanel's legacy is an empire, Gabrielle Chanel's life wasn't always so divine. Follow a rags-to- riches tale of how Chanel made herself into a style legend, and discover what she had to hide along the way. Published by Harper Collins, $22 women in our midst here each month—and I hope you'll join me along the way. 72 BRAVA Magazine September 2012 Photo by Eric Baillies for Our Lives Magazine.
