CUSTOM RIGS PRO TIPS Bruce Mallinson is the owner of Pittsburgh Power, an engine performance shop in Saxonburg, Pa. stack. It does not happen all of the time, but when it does, it happens at around 1,200 rpm. It also happens when I let off the throttle. The truck seems to idle fine and there are no lights on. Any idea what's going on? — Kenny Davis, Bloomington, Ind. Easy on the throttle Q being off the throttle. Then, when you give it fuel, the turbo needs time to open. So be gentle on the throttle. Remember to drive like you have an egg between your foot and the throttle. When the engine's lazy, the opera- tor has a tendency to give it too much throttle, and the excess fuel burning off is making the popping noise. It also could be the EGR valve opening. An engine needs 8 psi of air to properly burn the fuel. When you jab at the throttle before the turbo has produced the 8 psi of boost, you are creating havoc in the combustion chamber and exhaust system. — Bruce A and was wondering how to fill the cross-member bolt holes. Do you make a skin or use a slug? — Quinton Tipton, Abilene, Texas Detailing frame rails Q some auto body filler and sand to a smooth finish. Then, primer and paint. I would think you could cut out slugs and have them welded into the frame holes and that would save on some welding. If you're concerned about heat, fill them with fiberglass, angle hair mixture and resin, then sand and paint. Years ago I used to rebuild wrecked Corvettes and became an expert with fiberglass. I have even repaired rusted-through oil pans on diesel engines with 'glass and resin. However, do not use fiber- glass cloth, use angle hair. — Bruce A From what I have seen in the past few years, most people just weld the holes shut, grind, and then add Easy — it's the variable-geometry turbo closing because of (1) the low engine rpm and (2) your foot In high gears, there is sometimes a popping noise coming from what seems to be the passenger-side I like the look of a smooth, clean frame September 2012 | Overdrive | 65 Text INFO to 50298 or visit ovdinfo.com
