In 2011, in Hartford, Conn., the show was impacted by a blizzard that hit the area just days earlier. This year, TCI Expo (Nov. 8-10) was held shortly after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. And although the Baltimore area was not significantly affected by the hurricane, the storm's impact was still felt as many tree crews were still dealing with storm clean-up. It's hard to say exactly how much the hurricane impacted the show and its attendance, but most attendees and exhibitors with whom I spoke were pleased with the event. Some of the highlights were as follows: Student Career Days 2012 Hundreds of students participated in the 16th Annual Tree Care Industry Association Foundation Student Career Days event. Representing colleges, universities and vocational programs from across the country, students participated in friendly competitions to demonstrate their skills and expertise to win prizes. The Overall Collegiate Men Winner, first place, was Nathan Mode, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The Overall Collegiate Women Winner, first place, was Ellen Stollenwerk, Milwaukee Area Technical College. And the Overall Vocational Tech Winner, first place, was Tyler Snyder, Northlands Job Corps. Auctions raise money for tree research Attendees at TCI Expo in Baltimore placed bids on a brand new Morbark stump grinder and on a brand new Bandit chipper November 8-9, with Morbark and Bandit donating the profits from these sales to the Tree Research & Education Endowment Fund (TREE Fund). The winning bid on the Morbark D86 track stump grinder was $56,500 by William Collins of Tibbs Tree, Princeton, Mass. The winning bid on the Bandit Model 1390 HD chipper was $37,000 by Michael Roche of Stowe Tree Experts, Inc., Stowe, Vt.
