If streams, fields or uneven surfaces exist around your property, use these to your advantage. Conduct an assessment and determine other possible points of entry into your inventory lot. Place rocks, trees or other landscaping in these areas to make it difficult to get a vehicle, trailer or equipment over these obstacles. This will add to the challenges of a theft, and any perpetrators may decide it's not worth the risk or effort. Disabling Equipment – For some dealers that just can't seem to find the right mix of prevention measures, disabling equipment can be a very successful theft deterrent. Many equipment manufacturers produce universal keys for equipment, so getting them started and ready to load onto a trailer is easy for a thief. But what if the equipment has been further disabled by removing some key components (i.e. connections, batteries, other points) that prevent the equipment from being started? Now the challenge of removing this equipment is nearing impossible for thieves. Establishing this as a standard practice for target merchandise that must be stored outside makes a lot of sense. Thieves are unlikely to have the parts, skills or time necessary to get this equipment operating. Finding the right mix of security measures can sometimes depend on your location (urban versus rural) and available resources in the area. But it's clear: a dealer that hopes to be successful against equipment theft typically needs multiple levels of controls. Take the opportunity, before they target your dealership, to complete a comprehensive security assessment and determine your vulnerabilities.
