Meet the Chairman economy in recovery, Wagner has restored cutbacks and hired back most of the people. "This in and of itself has sent a solid message to employees," said Quirk. "We feel like survivors." Through a strategic plan launched in 2011, Wagner Equipment Co. broadened the focus of their business from homebuilding and heavy construction activity to include markets such as mining, power, and oil and gas. The company continues to watch expenses while embracing all market opportunities. "Now we cherish every relationship we have even more," said Quirk. 2013 Outlook For 2013 Wagner is looking for growth in power systems, oil and gas, and rental. The company is cautiously investing in both people and facilities as part of their strategic plan. "We are fortunate to have a number of strong opportunities," said Quirk. "And while uncertainty remains, we have renewed focus on developing all opportunities. We've done a good job of not just working with our friends and in our comfort zone. We have looked for and tried to develop core competencies that can provide stability in all economic conditions." While embracing new opportunities, Wagner understands it must continue to support the heavy earthmoving customers that have been the company's core. Today, the focus is on building credibility and expertise in all areas. "When we build capability, expertise and critical mass it helps supports all customers. We can utilize our technicians over every market," Quirk noted. Quirk's Take on What Employees Want: 1. They want to be informed. 2. They want to be trained. 3. They want to feel valued. 4. They want to know they have a future. What's Your Answer? As Quirk works towards greater engagement and increased membership in 2013, don't be surprised if you get a call. He's engaging and persuasive, and dealers may have a hard time saying "no" to the man whose answer is usually "yes." n Joanne Costin is a freelance writer and marketing consultant focusing on the construction industry.
