Daniel P. Rini, Ph.D. Oviedo-based RINI Technologies specializes in Miniature Refrigeration Systems for application in Personal Cooling Devices, Lasers and Electronics Cooling. Education: B.S. in Aerospace Engineering, M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, University of Central Florida Inspiration: The companys products were a direct result of the work I did while I was in grad school at UCF. There, I had the idea to start the company because there was a market opportunity for our unique cooling technologies. Career goals: To grow RINI Technologies to the point where we have a family of products based on our core technology, that provide valuable solutions to our customers while maintaining revenue growth, profitability and a rewarding work environment. Favorite part of the job: Witnessing the satisfaction of one of my employees when they accomplish something extraordinary. President RINI Technologies Inc. www.rinitech.com Accidental discovery: Weve had many positive surprises over the years, but I would not characterize anything as accidental. Our discoveries are the result of careful research. Martin Handfield, M.S., Ph.D. Headquartered in Tampa, Oragenics focuses on the discovery, development and commercialization of a variety of probiotic and anti-infective technologies that are revolutionizing oral health, and fighting multi-drug resistant infections. Education: B.S. in Biochemistry, M.S. in Clinical Microbiology, and Ph.D. in Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, Laval University, Quebec, Canada Career goals: Dental caries (tooth decay or cavity) remain the most prevalent infectious disease worldwide, affecting almost everyone at some point in their lives. Last year alone, nearly 100,000 people died in the U.S. from hospital acquired infections. To be part of a team of scientific/clinical professionals dedicated to improving oral health and involved in cutting-edge research on novel anti-infectives is a very exciting opportunity. Best advice: The three most important things in life, science and business are perseverance, perseverance and perseverance. Vice President, Research and Development Oragenics Inc. www.oragenics.com Biggest challenge: Science is all about learning from your mistakes. There is a little bit of valuable information in every single failed experiment, if you are able to see past the broken test tube and coincidentally, experiments fail all the time! florida.HIGH.TECH 2013 fht_faces_2013.indd 53 53 2/11/13 2:26 PM
